All Three Zones Origin StoryThis project started as a hobby for me & eventually turned into a full-time job once more people were interested. Based on the work of Eric Tulsky & Ryan Stimson, the goal of All Three Zones is to provide more detailed stats about the NHL, also known as "microstats." It's led to some enlightening studies on how the game is played and trends in the league.
Breaking down offense into different categories with stats like zone entries, exits & transition data has helped me get a richer understanding of hockey. Many others felt the same & it's blossomed into a cool little community online. This project has grown so much since I started in 2016 and I've taken huge steps into making the data more accessible for subscribers. I have tracked over 3,000 games the past four NHL seasons & hope to add more (as well as other leagues) in the coming years as this project continues to grow. Why Subscribe? Subscribing will get you access to this data, both in spreadsheet form & in Tableau charts, which are linked on the site. Just $7 a month gets you access to everything, as well as some new tools I've been working on during the off-season. Tracking the data takes a lot of time & legwork on my end, so I always appreciate those who find some value or enjoyment in using it. - Corey S. |

About Corey
An avid sports fan for most of my life, I've always been immersed with numbers. Whether it was on the back of trading cards or stats from the newspaper, it's something I always obsessed over. This soon turned into a hobby with tracking data that the NHL doesn't provide for my old Carolina Hurricanes blog, Shutdown Line. I would track stats like zone entries, scoring chances & zone exits for my post-game breakdowns. It helped me have a better understanding of hockey & its unpredictable nature. The breakdowns were so popular that fans of other teams started asking me to track these stats for their teams & that eventually turned into a massive crowdfunded project where I tracked microstats for the entire 2013-14 NHL season.
This led me down an interesting career path. I consulted with an NHL team for a couple of years, worked at the OHL & USHL level and have done various consulting/data collection jobs over the years. My goal has been to bring these microstats to the public & make the data as accessible as possible. It's been my way of making it easy to apply statistics to events that happen while watching the games. I've always wanted this type of data available to the public because of how much it helped me better understand the game. Others have felt the same & it eventually turned into my own little small business. I'm known as the "microstats guy" or "he who watches ALL the games" in some circles.
My writing/work has been featured on publications such as TSN, SB Nation, The Athletic, & McKeen's Hockey (currently).
